The literature depends on the specific project topic and will therefore be provided by the project advisor on an individual basis.


Since their advisor supervises project students individually, there is not scheduled weekly date.


To be eligible for this project, students are required to have existing basic knowledge in the area of databases and information systems as taught in the course “Database Systems” (INF-12040). Additionally, experience with a programming language that is appropriate for systems implementation, such as C/C++, Java or C#, is mandatory. Ideally, students will also have obtained credits from an advanced course or seminar about databases and information systems, such “Data Management in the Cloud” (INF-12820), “XML Technologies” (INF-12630), and “Data Warehousing and OLAP” (INF-10365).


Students will be graded based on equal contributions of following project parts.

  • technical documentation of the practical work (20-25 pages)
  • project presentation (30 minutes)

In this project, students will work on a comprehensive topic in the area of databases and information systems, which will often have a direct association to the research conducted in the group of Jun.-Prof. Dr. Michael Grossniklaus. A project typically consists of a review of the related literature, systems design and implementation as well as experimentation and evaluation.


The goal of this project is to provide students with experience in individual and independent scientific work. Under supervision, students will first learn to manage a complex project in terms of tasks, milestones and meetings. Second, students on their own will conduct project tasks, such as design, implementation, evaluation, and documentation. Finally, in the context of the project presentation and final report, students will obtain valuable experience in communicating their ideas and the results of their work to others.


The time and effort of this project will amount to 300 hours.
